Default Extracted Character Models

I mentioned that I was doing this, so now I'm posting about it.

Okay, for the non-3D savvy, I went into the asset files for the PC version Mass Effect 2 and found the art files for the characters. I'm now pulling out the actual workable 3D files that can be imported into 3ds Max (a modeling program), and I'm messing around with them--for funsies.

I pulled out Garrus, and there's a few minor complications with the textures on his visor and whatnot that I'm working through. So, I pulled out Thane, and his textures were relatively simpler.

I then played around with the model itself, posing and whatnot. I started off simple enough and shifted around the face to give Thane a "These are some mighty inappropriate meditations" face. It was fun.

I just did a simple render of what I did and put it up on my dA, so check it out, if you like:

Oh, Siha... by ~Lordess-Alicia on deviantART

I'll definitely be doing more, and I'll post when I have things.

---

Anyway, yeah, has anyone else done this, tried it, want to, etc.? Discuss! Ideas on what else to do would be cool too.

(Crazy thing I learned...Thane has like normal human-type teeth. So weird.)

A few people have worked them into XNA (a program a Tomb Raider fan created for making renders with the games' assets), I was thinking of trying it out myself ... 3DS Max is a bit complicated for me. XD

Funny, I never thought of Thane as being sinister before despite his homicidal leanings

So with this crazy tech, can you do anything with these character models? Like posing them together and other rude/inappropriate shenanigans?

Does it allow access to your own personal custom Shepard?

To Biotic: I have absolutely 0 XNA experience, and I'm not sure how it compares to 3ds Max, which I find quite fun--though definitely it has its frustrations. (I probably see it that way since I use it as a toy to make crude pictures.)

To Rusted Cage: Dat Thane's got more on his mind than assassinations...like, ass...I'm just gonna stop there.

Anyway, I can basically do anything with the models as far as poses are concerned. I can put multiple characters into the same file and pose them more or less however I want. (There are always limitations to what can be moved and how just based on the design of the character.) If I weren't a piece of shit, I'd be able to actually add cool stuff to them or something, but unfortunately, I am indeed a piece of shit, so just getting them textured with their original textures and figuring out the bone functionalities is enough work for me. Posing is as much as I can do--for now anyway.

As far as custom Shep's are concerned, I have no clue how I would go about that. I've yet to stumble across the Shepard files yet. My assumption is that I would be able to find the default Shepard models as well as the models for the different hairstyles, and I guess the makeup would be textures. Hmm, I dunno, I'll let you know when I find out more.

Here's my latest handiwork, Garrus flipping the double bird:

(I gave up on his visor. Damn stacked diffuse/spec maps have my balls in a bear trap. Luckily, it was just a sub-object of his head, so it was easy to delete. Grawr.)

I've never seen Archangel look cooler! Good job.

I had a sub-object of my arse but I flushed it.

Get your "balls" out of the bear trap and give us more. Can I request Tali next?

Haha, thanks. It's my new desktop, so now I get flipped off whenever I minimize my windows. Life is good.

I'm not gonna touch your ass or any of your sub-objects. O.o

The idea of doing Tali (and her visor and crazy luminescing eyes) has made my balls shrink, so I guess I can slip them out of the bear trap now. I will start working on Tali today though, but I make no guarantees.

If I can pull her off, is there any particular pose you'd be interested in seeing? (Note: "Naked" is not a pose. Just getting that out in front now.)

---

UPDATE: Her basic body and everything wasn't difficult, and I ended up making a custom texture for her visor that looks close enough. The only troubles now are her luminescing eyes and the light on her mouth, which I'm working on. I made a quick picture without them because I had an idea in my head, and I couldn't resist.

If Tali were on my ship, we'd be going through marker removal solution faster than mining probes and ship fuel combined.

I made two Garrus and Shepard pictures because I do have a weakness for that damn awkwardly lovable alien, as much as I hate to admit it.

Putting the female Shepard together was surprisingly difficult. I had a lot of weird/frustrating situations which I won't go into length about, but I had to do a lot of weird things in order for a Shepard to not look absolutely terrible. (Still not satisfied. Guh.)

You need to do some Miranda & Liara action. Now that would be perfect.
