Default 1,000 Story Variations in Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 3 to follow 'over 1,000' story variations

Bioware has revealed that Mass Effect 3 will be shaped by over 1,000 story variations from the first two games in the series.

Like its predecessor, Mass Effect 3 will offer continuation of the decisions players made in previous iterations of the franchise.

But according to ME2 project lead Casey Hudson, things have gotten a little complicated for the studio.

"We plan out the larger plot points of the story from one game to the next, but it would be impossible to plan it all in advance," he told PC Zone issue 224 (in all good stores now, folks).

"More importantly, we'd never be able to plan as many creative opportunities if we'd do it all up front. Instead, we record what a player has done in a play-through, and then we have all of those choices available that writers can refer to as they build storylines...

"Numerically, it's over 1,000 variables that we'll have access to for shaping the Mass Effect 3 experience for people who've played the previous games."

Hudson said that Bioware wouldn't be reinventing its action-RPG approach with the third game - which the studio has already started work on.

"If you define an RPG as a game where you equip your hero by sifting through an inventory of hundreds of miscellaneous items and spend hours fiddling with numerical statistics, then Mass Effect 2 isn't one," he added.

"In Mass Effect 2 we focused on what we love about RPGs: An awesome sense of exploration, intense combat, a deep and non-linear story that's affected by your actions, and rich customisation of your armour, weapons and appearance...

"We had an overwhelmingly positive response to this approach, and while we'll make further adjustments to it for Mass Effect 3, we're really happy with how it's been received so far."

Tim Ingham

I wonder just how many of those opportunities to have decisions made in ME II to effect ME III they'll take. I really hope it's more major stuff than the frilly effects ME I had on ME II.

I agree Biotic.
I mean my flirting with Kaidan from ME1 and staring at his photo during ME2 should qualify for a marriage proposal and babies with him in ME3. Not a damned email on my ship saying 'Oh hey Simone, I'm over my hissy fit from ME2 when I bashed you b/c Cerberus brought you back to life and bitched you out. Kthx. hugs and kisses, Kaidan".

If I just get stupid emails reflecting, what I feel are more emotional aspects of the game I'll send Bioware hate mail.

I think Bioware is going to tread lightly when it comes to our LI's from ME1. On the Bioware forums there are a ton of dedicated fans that CLEARLY have an emotional investment in some face time with Kaidan/Ash/Liara and Garrus and (small portion want to do Wrex too, eww). They need to honor at least our original LI's I think. Just a scene or two, something that cements that we live HEA would suffice..and enough convo choices where we feel we can respond appropriately!
If they shirk on that, I think they will get a lot of hate mail. Of course, I'm in it for the action, but I always love the emotional moments too. That's why they were able to capture a lot of female audience with this game I think. Not only could we play a female lead in the game and not feel like it was a lame last minute option that wasn't simpatico with the plot and game- we had times during the game to exercise our more emotional side.

I wonder if Bioware will actually show nudity in ME3. I doubt it, since they seemed to scale it back in ME2.

Sorry for another post but I just thought about this. Why not make it an option at the beginning of the game of how much nudity you want in the game.

Hurry someone submit that for ME3.
