I actually didn't find it a chore to learn to drive. It's basically the same as the Warthog in Halo.

I also used the topographic maps, after I figured out how the turret guides the Mako.

I think most people found it hard to drive because it seems like it should have tank controls. Forward and backward movement with the left stick - turning with the right. First time I played ME1, I hated the Mako - though on my second playthrough it's actually kind of fun. Just takes getting used to. I think everyone would have been happier if there was a super easy tutorial-esk mission where we could get used to it without being attacked by Geth constantly.
